How to Start Your Pet Sitting Business

Starting a pet sitting business might seem easy and you might be asking what you could possibly need other than to just show up at someones house and watch their pets... well nothing is ever that easy. I will go into more detail in other chapters of exactly how some of this works but here are the basics:

First people need to be able to find your business and to find you. Creating a webpage, Facebook, Google Plus, Nextdoor Neighbor, and Twitter accounts are great steps in helping potential clients do just that. But first you need to pick a name, check to see if its available and register it with your state government and obtain necessary licenses or permits . You will also need pet sitting insurance and if you are going to employ anyone other than yourself you will also want to be bonded. Next you will want to create the legal entity for your business, usually either as a single owner corporation or LLC and then register for tax purposes. Consider consulting your tax accountant to find the best business plan for your own individual needs. After you become a legitimate business you will need to open a business bank account to track your expenses and income.

Now that you have the basics complete you will need to get the word out. Decide what services you would like to offer(will you collect mail, take out the trash, clean, will you care for multiple pets, just dogs or all pets? what size of dog, will you walk them, overnights or drop ins only etc. Then decide how much you are charging, and when you will be available. Create a calendar and stick to it. Fill your social media with the services you offer, your experience and what makes you special in a sea of other pet sitters. Next mobilize your friends and family to like and share your social media, have them talk to their coworkers and friends.

Word of mouth will be great once you get going but you will need to create business cards and/or fliers to hand out. Take them to the groomers, to the veterinarian, to coffee shops, to anywhere there is a bulletin board or a counter that you can leave them on(ask first). Next steps can include swag with your logo or name printed on them, a magnetic car sign, or even a shirt printed up with your logo that your wear around town or out walking dogs.

Congrats, you have someone interested in your services, now what? First you will need to meet face to face with your client and your client's pets to decide if they are a good fit for your business. Never agree to house sit without first meeting your client, agreeing on a price, how they will pay, and signing the necessary paperwork, or meeting their pets.

During the meeting your will need a contract that states what you will do and what your client will do and pay for your services, you will also need all of the pets information and your clients contact information. If they are a good fit and agree to your terms and services, go ahead and book your client, update your calendar and most importantly, show up on time.
